Copyright © technoKrats 2 Alcohol abuse is a pattern of drinking that results in harm to one ’ s health, interpersonal relationships, or ability to work. Alcohol abuse is sometimes referred to by the less specific term alcoholism. There are two types of alcoholics: those who have anti-social and pleasure-seeking tendencies, and those who are anxiety-ridden people who are able to go without drinking for long periods of time but are unable to control themselves once they start.

The degree of intoxication, however, varies between and within various cultures that engage in this practice. A binge on alcohol can occur over hours, last up to several days, or in the event of extended abuse, even weeks. Due to the long-term effects of alcohol misuse, binge drinking is considered to be a major public health issue.

Signs of alcohol abuse show its drastic effects on the central nervous system, including inebriation and poor judgment; chronic anxiety, irritability, and insomnia. Prolonged use leads to cirrhosis and liver failure. With cirrhosis, patients develop an inability to process hormones and toxins. The skin of a patient with alcoholic cirrhosis can feature cherry angiomas, palmar erythema and — in acute liver failure — jaundice and ascities.

If a person drives while drunk or regularly consuming [binge drink] (more than five standard drinks in one drinking session), they are considered to have been involved in alcohol abuse. Short-term abuses of alcohol include, but are not limited to, violence, injuries, unprotected sexual activities and, additionally, social and financial problems.

10 Alcohol is a readily available toxic chemical that can yield pleasurable experience or disastrous effects that can cause enormous suffering. The most tragic effects occur when a woman consumes alcohol during pregnancy, producing irreversible harm to the developing fetus. The consumption of alcohol during pregnancy is the single greatest cause of preventable birth defects and learning and performance disabilities. Alcohol is associated with motor vehicle accidents and a range of other detrimental effects. While government regulatory agencies and policy responses have worked to reduce the adverse health and societal effects, over $1 billion is spent every year advertising the consumption of this chemical. In conclusion, consume with caution and beware of your individual sensitivity.
