Mr. Gardner
Geography impacts where and how people live How does your geography impact where and how you live? How has geography impacted history? Globe is the most accurate way to represent the earth Compass rose measures cardinal direction (north, south, east, west)
Geography : study of the distribution and interaction btw. physical and human features 5 themes of geography 1.location: where is it? Absolute location : exact place on earth Relative location : describes a place in comparison to places around it 2.place: what does it look like? 3.region: 1 of the 7 continents 4.movement: how do people, ideas, and goods move around? 5.human-environment interaction: how do people use the land?
lines of latitude and longitude help to pinpoint any place on earth, called absolute location ex. 57 degrees north, 93 degrees east Latitude then longitude Landforms
Imaginary Lines: Equator: crosses the globe around the middle like a belt The equator divides the earth into half spheres or hemispheres (north and south) Prime Meridian: divides the globe in half vertically – like a line that goes up and down The Prime Meridian is located at 0 degrees longitude The Prime Meridian divides the earth into hemispheres (east and west)
The equator and prime meridian are the starting points for imaginary lines that run north and south and east and west and help find locations Latitude and Longitude Latitude runs from side to side or east to west Longitude runs long up and down or north to south Equator is a line of Latitude Prime Meridian is a line of Longitude
title : explains subject of map & gives you an idea of the info the map conveys key/legend : explains symbols represented on map scale : shows distance ratio btw. map and what it really is on Earth compass : shows directions of north, south, east, and west
Your map must include the following: Compass rose, legend, and scale Label your latitude and longitude lines on the grid in 10 degree intervals You must include three of the following geographical features: Canal, mountain range, island, plain, plateau, sea, strait, etc. BE SURE TO NAME THESE FEATURES! You must place 5 cities on your map and name these, as well
On the back of your continent, write a paragraph explaining why you placed your cities and geographical features where you did. Things to consider: How did the access to fresh water affect the location of each city? What is the purpose of your natural resources and other geographical features you included?
