Using the Dictionary Using a dictionary can help you become a better speaker, reader, and writer. What do you know about the dictionary?

What is a Dictionary? A book of words and their meanings, arranged in alphabetical order, by word.

Alphabetical Order All the words are in ABC order from A to Z.

Guide Words Within each letter, there are guide words at the top of each page. These words are the first and the last words on the page. Guide words should be used when looking for a word, in order to save time.

Entry Word Each word defined in the dictionary is called an entry word. Entry words are printed in bold print.

Which entry word and definition of arm is used in these sentences? This chair has no arms. Mulan bought arms in the marketplace.

Which entry word, part of speech, and definition of arm is used in these sentences? A lion design decorated the knight’s arms. She broke her arm playing football. The emperor’s generals armed the troops.
