Provenance and Context Content Standard (Emerging) – Status of Activities H. K. Ramapriyan Science Systems and Applications, Inc. & ESDIS Project, Code 423, NASA GFSC 1 Winter ESIP Meeting January 7, 2016
Standards Activities Since January 2014, NASA has been a member of International Committee for Information Technology Standards – Geographic Information Systems (INCITS/L1) Jeanne Behnke – Principal H. K. “Rama” Ramapriyan (SSAI/NASA), Ted Habermann (THG), Walter Baskin (SSAI/NASA) – Alternates Currently working on ISO : “Geographic Information - Preservation of digital data and metadata” initiated by Prof. Wolfgang Kresse, Chair of International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) Ad-hoc Group on Standards Being handled by ISO TC 211 Working Group 7 (WG- 7) 2
Standards Activities ISO (Cont.) Rama participating as a U.S. expert on WG-7 TC 211 Plenary Meetings held in Southampton, England during June 8-12, 2015, and in Sydney, Australia during December 7-11, 2015 Draft of document being revised based on comments from the meetings and reviews ISO is a framework that states principles and rules rather than going into any details of content that should be preserved. It will take more work to get PCCS-like content into a standard. Not practical for this standard to include such details for each of the disciplines it intends to cover. Rama has suggested including language in the standard to suggest/require such content standards to be developed and open the door for supplementary standards – e.g., ISO (similar to ISO ). Next updated draft is in hand and under review. Committee draft to be finalized and sent for broader review soon. 3
