What are we doing in Lothian….? Professor Alex McMahon, Deputy Director of Strategic Planning and Modernisation

Improving service provision for people who may attract a diagnosis of personality disorder

Bringing People Together Three Stakeholder Events Taking Away the Mystery, Nov 2006 Relating and Relationships, Nov 2007 Making a difference, March 2009

Taking Away the Mystery There are good reasons.. Life Trap “I know but I don’t feel” Different realities Overwhelming emotion

Relating and Relationships Early attachment relationships Ongoing relationship difficulties Who does the relating

Making a difference act as if what you do makes a difference. It does Humility Curious mind Patience Insight / talking Experiential Relational

Has led to…a shared values base Developing a shared values base for mental health in Lothian – 10 Essential Shared Capabilities and Realising Recovery 6 modules and WRAP; Advance Statements; Person Centered Planning; Peer Support Pool of trainers c16 – over ½ with lived experience of mental health difficulties A collective response to work across Lothian in line with strategic priorities

Has led to…Creating a resource pack by service users for use by workers Funded project partnership with CAPS Presentation at ‘Making A Difference’ Positive experiences sourced from websites, bulletin boards Responses grouped around a number of themes Services and support Knowledge and information Attitude and approach Validation Friends, Family and Peer Support Thinking Outside the box

Has led to…ICP for borderline personality disorder Decision we would include borderline Good service user and carer involvement Final stages incorporating recommendations from the Matrix

Has led to.. Making a difference with staff Shift into a focus on the parts that we as staff play in 'caring' relationships. A reflection on what our agendas are, what our desires are, and what our needs are. Thought about how our actions and interventions might be understood and experienced by others.

Model developed with Psychotherapy Department and Homeless Service Regular meetings to think about where we are in relation to people who are being considered for exclusion. Analysis of the circumstances leading up to event. Attempts where possible to maintain a relationship, and one that has the potential for health. Contracts of engagement for clients (for staff actually).

Exploring…. Advice Line for frontline practitioners Moray Model – Self-help, support group Supervision and training for support workers in 3 rd sector Greater collaboration between specialist services and 3 rd sector

This time next year… Hope to have made a difference
