SACOSAN I-III A Process of Advocacy

Before there was SACOSAN there was Africasan in 2002 It was hosted by the South African Government at Ministerial level It was to prepare for the Joberg Conference It was an event

SACOSAN Is a process to build political will for Sanitation in South Asia An initiative of the Government of Bangladesh It is owned and led by Government

SACOSAN I Oct Nine Countries Resulted in the Dhaka Declaration

Dhaka Declaration Elimination of open defecation Subsidies only for the poorest of the poor Community subsidies for promotion, awareness, capacity building Rewards to local government and communities Focus on children faeces, hygienic practices, schools Gender sensitive programmes

Follow up Ministerial meeting every two years Inter-country working group to meet every year

SACOSAN II Postponed twice September 2006 Renewed Commitment ICWG met for the first time Launched their National Sanitation Policy Next three meetings planned

SACOSAN III November SAARC Countries Access to sanitation and safe drinking water is a basic human right Total and sustainable sanitation
