STAYING SAFE PC CHRIS TURNER HOLBORN SECTOR TEAM

Staying safe is all about using COMMON SENSE

LET ME SET THE SCENE It’s Friday 5.30pm in late November Your late finishing Everybody is in the pub And they are all waiting for you!

What should you be thinking about ?

Allow me to give you some ideas What route shall I take? What do I need to take with me? Anybody to walk with? Let somebody know I’m on my way! What do I know about the area ? What am I wearing ? Should I let someone know I’m leaving? What do I do should something go wrong?

ROUTE PLANING

What should I consider? Time of day The weather Street lighting Is the area normally busy? Escape routes (where to get help) MOST IMPORTANT Do I know where I’m going?

How can I avoid becoming A victim of crime?

Walk tall, look confident! Be aware of what’s happening around you Try and keep at least one Hand free Make eye contact, let them Know you’ve seen them Carry an alarm

What do I do if some one Tries to attack me?

SHOUT! Or SWEAR! RUN! FIND OTHERS or GET THEIR ATTENTION

Can I defend myself?

Common law says - As long as you have the honest Held belief that the force you used was REASONABLE and NECESSARY! You can use force to- Defend your self or others Save life Prevent a breach of the peace Not forgetting the pre-emptive strike

I’ve made it, I’m at the pub!

Don’t let down your guard! Always keep your belongings close Keep mobiles out of sight Do not flash money about Watch out for people trying to distract you! MOST IMPORTANT be aware of strangers buying you drinks!

Had beer! Need food! OOPs need more money!

CASH POINTS Always look who’s around you! Don’t be afraid to ask people to move back and give you space Keep your hands as free as possible Make sure the cash point looks normal Avoid distractions!

Time to go home, What could be Easier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Where possible use Black Cabs, if not use a reliable company you trust. DO NOT use anybody who touts for business on the street.

HOME IN TIME FOR TEA BISCUITS AND A GOOD BED TIME STORY!
