Federalism The division of power between the states and the federal (national) government The constitution strengthened the power of the national government but reserved many powers for the states.

Separation of powers Power is divided within the 3 branches of the federal government. This helps prevent any one branch from abusing its powers Why is it important to have separation of powers in the Federal government? What could happen if this system did not exist? How would this impact your freedom?

Checks and Balances Another way to protect against abuse of power in the federal government This system gives each of the 3 branches ways to limit the powers of the other 2.
