We can use a STORY MAP to increase our reading comprehension.

A story map is a graphic organizer that helps us to organize the information from the books that we read. Story maps can help us “find our way” through a book much like a regular map shows where things are.

Objective: We will use a story map to help us comprehend “Hercules’ Quest” and recognize the pattern of events.

Myths contain: characters setting plot

Characters Are often gods and goddesses with supernatural powers.

Setting Is the time and place in which the story occurs.

Plot Is the series of events. In myths, it is typically made up of challenges that the main character must pass on a journey, or quest. These challenges often come in a pattern of three.

A story map teaches us about story structure and the elements that make a good story. These elements correspond to the basic questions one would ask about any story:

Name of the Story:____________________ Setting: When Where Characters: Who Plot: Beginning Middle End
