Shaping the Paragraph A Topic Sentence TS = first sentence of the paragraph. It shows the main idea and is usually controversial. It is what you have to prove. It is often called an assertion

Shaping the Essay- Paragraph Evidence –This is the support from the literature –It is the WHAT for your commentary –Plot References facts, examples from story (what happened), support –Include citations (with page numbers) –Quotes / paraphrasing – both are okay Evidence can’t be argued with Evidence supports your point!

Setting up Evidence All evidence needs to be introduced Include a transitional word or phrase, the situation, and the speaker prior to the evidence. One way to set up: 1.Choose your evidence 2.Answer who, what, when, where, why, how about evidence. 3.Choose three of these to include in your set-up

Shaping the Essay- Paragraph Explanation –This is the stuff from inside your head! –This is the answer to “so what?” –Your words and explanations (still no I or YOU) –May be referred to as: analysis; interpreting; inference; insight; reasons; commentary, elaboration

Shaping the Essay- Paragraph CONCLUDING SENTENCE  A CS wraps up the paragraph.  It rephrases the main idea.

Example Paragraph In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter is a champion to many of the more insecure students at Hogwarts (TS). For example, when Malfoy takes Neville’s Rememberall (set-up), Harry gets on a broom and gets it back (Evidence). He simply cannot stand someone who picks on others (Explanation). Because of this, Harry becomes a hero to those less fortunate(Explanation). In other words, he has found a place where he belongs, and he becomes determined to protect the vulnerable people he has grown fond of (CS).
