Articles of Confederation Fearing a too strong national government Made the first US govt too weak No enforcement or interpretation powers Executive/judicial powers missing

Weaknesses of A/C

Starting Over Representatives met in Philadelphia to fix the problems but ended up throwing the A/C out and starting over Created the Constitution of the United States of America!

Philosophy into action Rouseau’s Separation of Powers Created the 3 branches to balance out power Executive=President Legislative=Congress Judicial= Supreme Ct

Federalism Brand new idea Sharing power between a national government and local state governments Each level has power the other doesn’t

Bill of Rights Shocking new Constitution had to be sold to the rest of the citizens It had been written behind locked doors Only way to get enough States to agree to it was to add a Bill of Rights

Bill of Rights 1st 10 amendments to the Constitution guarantee in writing those personal freedoms the founders were fighting for Speech, press, religion, jury trial etc.

The United States of America was saved! And became a beacon of hope and freedom to the rest of the world.
