Poetry Analysis

Metaphor - a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance. something used, or regarded as being used, to represent something else; emblem; symbol.

Simile – A figure of speech in which two unlike things are explicitly compared using Like or As. An instance of such a figure of speech or a use of words exemplifying it.

Personification - The attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form.

Mood – Mood is a literary element that evokes certain feelings or vibes in readers through words and descriptions.

Tone – Tone is an attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience. Tone is generally conveyed through the choice of words or the viewpoint of a writer on a particular subject.

Imagery – Imagery means to use figurative language to represent objects, actions and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses. Hi swain!!

Theme – Theme is defined as a main idea or an underlying meaning of a literary work that may be stated directly or indirectly.

Rhyme - A rhyme is a repetition of similar sounding words occurring at the end of lines in poems or songs. E.G. Baa baa black sheep, have you any wool? Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full! One for the master, one for the dame, And one for the little boy who lives down the lane.

Rhyme Scheme – The rhyme scheme is the practice of rhyming words placed at the end of the lines in the prose or poetry. Rhyme scheme refers to the order in which particular words rhyme. If the alternate words rhyme, it is an “a-b-a-b” rhyme scheme E.G. Baa baa black sheep, have you any wool? (A) Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full! (A) One for the master, one for the dame, (B) And one for the little boy who lives down the lane. (B)

Alliteration – Refers to matching initial consonant sounds. E.G. Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and may call me V.

Assonance – or Slant Rhyme exists in words having the same vowel sound. E.G. kill and bill, wall and hall, shake and hate Fight and site.

Consonance – A rhyme that exists in words having the same consonant sound. E.G. rabbit and robber, ship and sheep, Slice and solace.
