Summary North America has split into two nations at war with each other. Day and Tess are from one nation and June, Metias and, Thomas are from the other nation. Day is the most wanted criminal and he is accused of killing Metias, June’s brother. After Metias’ death June joined the Republic and went to find and kill the person who killed Metias. June finds Day and he is captured by the Republic, but June later discovers Day did not kill Metias, Thomas did.

Day  Day is a smart fifteen year old criminal. He failed his trial five years before, but escaped the lab where he was taken for testing. At the beginning of the book, lives on the streets with his friend, Tess, and steals to help his family and to help other poor people.

Tess  A thirteen year old orphan who Day took care of. She helps Day steal but she is better at helping people than she is at being a criminal.

June  A fifteen year old prodigy who attends Drake University, the Republic's most prestigious military training school. She is the first person to ever get a perfect score on her trial. At first she lives with her brother, Metias, who has taken care of her since their parents died in a car accident. When Metias is murdered she goes out to find the person responsible for his death.

Metias  Metias is June’s brother and a captain of the Republic. Before he was murdered he was a very good and noble military officer. Even though he was part of the Republic he became suspicious of it so he hacked into their system and left a blog for June to figure out the secrets of the Republic.

Commander Jameson Metias’s mean former commander. He recruits June after Metias’s murder to find the murderer.

Thomas  Metias’s good friend, and he killed Metias.
