I. FIRST ATTEMPT – THE LOST COLONY A.WHERE? ROANOKE ISLAND, OFF THE COAST OF THEN VIRGINIA, TODAY NORTH CAROLINA B. WHEN: C. RESULT: THE COLONY DISAPPEARED BY 1590?????????????? D. SIGNIFICANCE: THE FAILURE SHOWED THAT IT TOOK MORE THAN JUST A WEALTHY SPONSOR TO MAINTAIN A COLONY.

II. JOINT-STOCK COMPANIES A.WHAT: COMPANIES THAT ALLOWED SEVERAL INVESTORS TO POOL $$$$ TO SUPPORT A COLONY IN THE HOPE OF MAKING A PROFIT. B. THEY HAD TO GET A CHARTER (PERMIT) FROM THE KING. C. EXAMPLE: VIRGINIA COMPANY OF LONDON

III. FIRST PERMANENT ENGLISH COLONY A.WHERE & WHEN: JAMESTOWN, VA IN 1605 B.PURPOSE: TO MAKE LOTS OF $$$$$$$ C.MAJOR PROBLEMS: 1- BUILT ON SWAMP LAND 2- THE INITIAL COLONISTS WERE ONLY CONCERNED WITH FINDING GOLD 3- DISEASE & STARVATION HITS HARD D. RESULT- ALMOST ALL THE COLONISTS DIE

IV. JOHN SMITH TAKES CONTROL A.MAKES AN DEAL WITH THE NEARBY NATIVE AMERICANS (THE POWHATAN) FOR FOOD B.HE FORCES COLONISTS TO WORK OR THEY GET NO FOOD, SOME ARE EVEN EXECUTED C.HE HEADS BACK TO ENGLAND AFTER AN INJURY, HE WILL NEVER GO BACK TO JAMESTOWN.

V. JAMESTOWN ALMOST FAILS IN 1609 A.THE POWHATAN START TO ATTACK AS THE NUMBER OF COLONISTS STARTS TO GROW B.A FAMINE KNOWN AS THE “STARVING TIME” HITS JAMESTOWN C.ONLY 60 OUT OF 600 ARE STILL ALIVE D.THOSE LEFT ALIVE DECIDED TO ABANDON JAMESTOWN, BUT REINFORCEMENTS ARRIVE

VI. JAMESTOWN BEGINS TO FLOURISH A.WHY? IN 1612, JOHN ROLFE INTRODUCES TABACCO TO JAMESTOWN. SOON “BROWN GOLD” BECOMES A HUGE CASH CROP. B. ROLFE WILL MARRY POCAHONTAS IN 1614 WHICH BRINGS PEACE WITH POWHATAN PEOPLE.

C. As Jamestown flourish there was a need for more laborers. D. Indentured servants from England came to Jamestown to work. E. In 1619, the first African laborers came to Jamestown. (They were NOT slaves) F. Also in 1619, Jamestown set up the House of Burgesses (the first example of a form of representative government in colonial America)
