Horse Colors

Sorrel A reddish brown horse with reddish, brown or tan mane and tail. Legs are the same color as the body. Their legs may also have white markings.

Bay A brown horse with black legs, mane and tail. Body color run from light brown, reddish to very dark brown, but legs, mane and tails are always black (they may also have white markings).

White White horses are born white. They have pink skins and usually blue or pink eyes.

Pinto White plus large patches of black, brown, chestnut or any other colors.

Gray Born dark with dark skin. Hair becomes whiter with age until pure white. A gray may range from iron gray (nearly black) to dapple gray, white gray or flea-bitten gray (with tiny flecks of black or brown).

Black Coal black without brown highlights

Buckskin A light to dark yellow with black mane and tail.

Dun Sandy yellow, reddish or brown, usually with darker legs, a dark stripe down the back, and a dark mane and tail.

Golden body color with white mane and tail. Can be a light to very dark gold color. Palomino

Roan Mixture of white hairs and one other color (chestnut, bay or black). A chestnut roan is called a strawberry roan or red roan. A black roan is called a blue roan.

Face Markings Star - Is a spot of white in the forehead Blaze - Is a wide stripe of white down the face

Strip - Is a narrow strip of white down the face. Bald Face - Is a white face extending across or including at least one eye and down on sides of face.

Snip - Is a spot of white on the muzzle.

Leg Markings Stocking - White extending to knee or hock. Half Stocking - White part way up cannon bone.

Pastern - White to bottom of fetlock. Ermine Spots - Black or colored spots in a white leg.

Sock - White includes fetlock. Coronet - White ring around coronet of hoof.

Heel Spot - White spot on the heel.
