Thinking as a Scientist LT: To develop a testable question and carry out a scientific investigations Evidence/Notes What makes a good testable question? Good Has measurable and quantifiable data measurements with numbers observations with specifics (like in observing and drawing) Includes and compares variables Poor More that one answer non- measurable or relative measurements includes bias Why questions are not good testable question.

Compare the Questions Does rock music make more money than hip-hop music? Vs What is the % increase in sales in rock music in the northeast area for the 2013 fiscal year?

You Try – Record question in your journal Do vegetarians experience fewer heart attacks than meat eaters?

JOBS FOR TERMITES- Everyone writes in the journal A – Materials Manager – clean up and asking for materials B- Reader – Read the directions out loud to group C- Recorder – Records info on presentation paper – Makes sure everyone writes in notebook. D- Presenter – Presents data to the class. If there is no D then A is presenter and materials manager.

Process and Procedure 1.√ 2. √ - Materials are at the station – Mrs. Kimble will bring you a termite 3. Attach the diagram in your journal – If you do not have the original – them tell which partner has the diagram. ( Make a sketch) 4. Record the 3 questions 5. Write your final question – Check with Mrs. Kimble to see if it is “testable” 6-8 – Record in your journal BE PREPARED TO PRESENT TOMORROW – WRITE QUESTION, EXPERIMENT, DATA, And RESULTS on the Handout – we will put them under the document camera Tomorrow for discussion.

QUESTION: Brief Description of Experiment : Data and Results: ANSWER TO QUESTION:

Read scenario on page 9 Label in your journal – process and procedure 1. Check off 2. Check off when you pick up materials and go to lab station ( Mrs. Kimble will bring you a termite) 3. Attach diagram to journal 4. 3 questions 5. Select 1 (Check with Mrs. Kimble to see if it is testable) 6-8 Answer in journal ( attach drawings, data, and evidence) PREPARE TO PRESENT INFO ON WHITE BOARDS: Write testable question and results Label Analysis- 1.Record testable questions of Groups 2.What is the importance of a good testable question. 3.Choose two groups testable questions and improve on the question. 4.Answer both bullets for question #4.
