What happened in Pompeii? Pompeii was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. It was covered in 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft.) of ash and pumice which helped preserve the city for thousands of years! Evidence of the destruction originally comes from a surviving account by Pliny the Younger
