W HAT IS A S OCRATIC S EMINAR ? Socrates’ belief in the power of asking questions, prize inquiry over information and discussion over debate. The Socratic seminar is a formal discussion, based on a text, in which the leader asks open-ended questions. Within the context of the discussion, students listen closely to the comments of others, thinking critically for themselves, and articulate their own thoughts and their responses to the thoughts of others.

W HAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES FOR THE SEMINAR ? Explore and evaluate new ideas, issues, and values in a particular text Learn to work cooperatively and to question intelligently and civilly. Understand proper communication skills that will support you in college, or life after high- school Gain support you for your upcoming argumentative essay on Of Mice and Men

W HAT IS YOUR ROLE ? A ND THE ROLE OF OTHERS ? The teacher = The leader: Leads thoughtful exploration of the ideas in the text by keeping the discussion focused, asking follow-up questions, and helping the students clarify their positions. The students = The participants. A good seminar happens when the participants…. Study the text Listen actively Share their ideas and questions in response to others Search for evidence to support their ideas See packet for more of your roles…
