First Grade Open House August 2015

Math Identify tens and ones Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems Using story problems to write number sentences Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false.

Math Compare two two-digit numbers based on meanings of the tens and ones digits, recording the results of comparisons with the symbols >,<, =. Count to 120, starting at any number less than 120. In this range, read and write numerals and represent a number of objects with a written numeral.

Math Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object *measure objects using a nonstandard unit Tell and write time to the hour and the half hour using analog and digital clocks.

Reading Read approx 60 words by the end of the year with 90% accuracy Identify compound words and contractions Identify character, setting, main idea, title, and author.

Reading Describe the connection between two individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a text. Ask and answer questions to help determine or clarify the meaning of words and phrases in a text.

Reading Identify the main topic and retell key details of a text. Identify who is telling the story at various points in a text. Identify basic similarities in and differences between two texts on the same topic (e.g., in illustrations, descriptions, or procedures).

Reading Distinguish long from short vowel sounds in spoken single-syllable words. Read words with inflectional endings. Orally produce single-syllable words by blending sounds (phonemes), including consonant blends. Read on-level text with purpose and understanding.

Writing By the end of the year students should able to construct 5-8 complete sentences on a given topic. Sentences need to have a capital letter at the beginning and period at the end. Sentences need to be a complete thought.

Writing Write multiple sentences in an order that supports a main idea or story. Use frequently occurring adjectives.
