World War 1 & 2 It is almost impossible to talk about World War 2 without describing what happened in World War 1

World War 1 (War Horse) 1914-1918 During the early part of the 1900’s many people had pride for their own country. (Nationalism) Nationalism- showing pride for your nation The trigger for the war was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, by a Yugoslav nationalist. 1 month later, Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia.

Before World War 1- Countries in Europe had Alliances (agreements to defend other friendly countries in case there is war) Alliances video

World War 1- Germany Jumps in – Austria-Hungary & Germany are very close countries (alliance). Germany then sends troops to France fearing they would enter to protect Russia.(Alliance)

World War 1 – sides Allies (Triple Entente) Central Powers Germany France Russia – 1917 leaves war, has revolution & becomes Soviet Union Great Britain Later (United States, Italy & Others ) Central Powers Germany Austria-Hungary Turkey (Ottoman Empire)

War Statistics - Russia lost more than anyone

65 Million people participated in WW1 13 Million people Died (Civilian & troops)

After World War 1 the German Empire, Russian Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman Empire had ceased to exist. National borders were redrawn, with several independent nations restored or created, and Germany's colonies were parceled out among the winners. (Britain, France, the United States and Italy) imposed their terms in a series of treaties. Treaty of Versailles was signed & the League of Nations was formed with the aim of preventing any repetition of such a conflict.. This, however, failed with economic depression, the Spanish flu of 1918, renewed European nationalism, weakened member states, and the German feeling of humiliation contributing to the rise of Nazism. These conditions eventually contributed to World War 2.

In World Wars 1 & 2, Germany invaded France and the Benelux countries, as well as the Netherlands. Before the United States came in and helped put an end to the war in 1945, Germany’ & Italy were ruled by Dictators. Germany = Adolf Hitler 1933-1945 Italy = Benito Mussolini 1921-1945 WW1 & WW2

After World War 2 (WW2) Germany was divided in half After World War 2 (WW2) Germany was divided in half. East Germany was controlled by the communist Soviet Union (Russia). And West Germany was controlled by Western Powers (UK, France, USA) From 1949-1989 the Soviet Union controlled East Germany & most of Eastern Europe.
