Chapter 3 Section 1 –The Jeffersonian Era

1) Election of 1800 was Thomas Jefferson (Democratic Republican) vs. John Adams (Federalist Party)

The election was brutal, and both parties accused the other many things. (Abigail Adams) 2) Jefferson beat Adams in the election, but Aaron Burr, Jefferson's running mate got the same number as votes. Congress took a separate vote and Jefferson won the Presidency. Burr became his Vice-President.

3) Because of the screw up in the election process, the election process was changed and the 12 th Amendment was added to the Constitution. Where the president and vice- president are voted upon separately. 4) Jefferson Republicanism: People should control the government and that a small and simple government is the best for people. He cut a lot of spending, shrunk the military, and removed internal taxes.

Marbury v. Madison (1803) 5) Before Adams leaves office he tries to make a few gov’t appointments. They aren’t approved before Adams leaves office. Jefferson takes over and said they don’t count. Told Madison not to deliver them. Causes Marbury v. Madison court case giving the courts power of Judicial review (Check on Congress)

6) Chief Justice John Marshall of the Supreme Court declared in the Judiciary Act of 1789 would have forced Madison to give up those approvals, was unconstitutional.

The Louisiana Purchase 1) Napoleon Bonaparte Emperor of France, is in many wars and needs money. France controls 1/3 rd modern day US. Jefferson makes a deal with Napoleon to sell that land to the US. 2) 828,000 square miles of land for $15 million. Doubling the size of the US.

Jefferson is threatened with impeachment now. Constitution doesn’t say who can buy land. Federalists are pro-British and anti- Napoleon, they don’t want to support Napoleon against the British. Jefferson is saved because James Madison (Secretary of State) helped write the Constitution, tell Jefferson don’t worry, he’ll handle it.

LEWIS & CLARK 1) Jefferson wants to send a team to explore the newly bought territory. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark put a team together and travelled all the way out West. Pg. 115 Geography Skillbuilder 1 and 2

The US is a brand new nation, only 23 years old, like a young adult. It has grown up a little but doesn’t know everything yet and it can’t doing everything yet on its own. Its older relative wants to keep babying it and sheltering it (Great Britain). How do you think the US, or any other 23 year is going to feel about that? Why is it so important that the US remain independent? What do you think it needs to prove to the world, and more importantly to itself?

Warm-Up: 9/25/15 How do past experiences and exposures influence future perspective and reactions?

6)President to be Andrew Jackson is a General during this war. His role was to fight the enemy Natives and British. (How would this come into play later ?)

Results of the War of 1812… 1)Federalist party dies out, due to lack of support. Dem-Reps become the only powerful party 2)Native Americans are completely seen as enemies now, not neighbors/rival. 3)Americans feel that they are the best and have a huge boost from beating the British and its allies twice.
