By George Deering and Oliver Russell

As ELT, we were asked to create a presentation to the class about Drax Power Station. We were given just one week to complete the task in as much detail as possible. Why this specific power station? You’re just about to find out!

Drax Power Station is located in Selby, North Yorkshire.

The actual power plant is the largest, cleanest and most efficient coal-fired power plant in the UK. It is responsible for 7-8% of all the UK’s electricity. It is capable of co-firing biomass and petcoke.

The Power Plant was originally called ‘Drax’ after the nearby village of Drax, which still exists today. The Power Plant was originally opened in In the mid-1980s it was then extended to the size it is today. In 1990 the Power Plant changed ownership several times.

 It’s generating capacity is 3,960 megawatts which is the highest amount for any power station in the UK.  It is also the newest coal-fired power station in the UK which is why we get most of our coal from other countries.

 The Power Plant is currently burning up to 7.5 million tonnes of coal every year.  The coal they use is currently being imported from the United States.
