Welcome To British Literature Mr. Hillman – Room 223

My Profile Professional Experience  7th year at Upper Dublin High School.  Taught 5 years at a federal school for at risk youth.  Taught for two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Sichuan Province, China.  6th Year as an Adjunct Professor at LaSalle University's BUSCA program.  Worked three years in Private Industry as a Corporate Trainer.

Education & Personal Information  Bachelors Degree in English from Dickinson College.  Masters Degree in Secondary English Education from Temple University  Upper Dublin community member  Proud husband & father of three kids, ages 8 years old, 4 years old and 2 years old.  Interests include…. I have 3 children so I no longer have interests.

Ultimate Goal for the Year Prepare students for the many challenges they will face next year.

Goals for the Year  Be better able to use all four language arts skills for any academic situation. Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening  Maintain, establish or improve their work habits, study skills and note taking abilities.  Improve their reading comprehension and attention to detail.  Be able to discuss the universality of themes common to British Literature and the human condition.  Be conversant in specific time periods in British History and the corresponding characteristics of that time period.

Texts for the Year  Adventures in English Literature (Class textbook)  Grendel  Beowulf  The Canterbury Tales  MacBeth  Frankenstein  Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde  Lord of the Flies  Brave New World  Animal Farm  A Man for All Seasons  Becket  Silas Marner

Grades Graded Assessments Include:  Tests - Includes tests, presentations, papers, projects  (35%-45%)  Quizzes - Includes quizzes, written assignments  (35%-45%)  Homework - All graded homework  (5%-20%)

Typical Work Load & Assessments  Reading nearly every night.  I use lots of quizzes during the reading of a text  Papers, tests or multi-media projects at the completion of texts.

How to Communicate Questions or Concerns?  is a great launching point for me… I welcome fast little “checking in” s. I am happy to call you back, but many times an e- mail can kick that off.

Key Student Resource - Class Wiki   Class Documents/Supplemental Resources  Discussion Boards/Bulletin Boards  Homework  Link Student to class Weblog  Link to Student Grades

In Closing Senior Year...is a great year …I’m glad to be a part of it.
