Tuesday 2 nd February 2016

 To share information about the Year 6 SATs  To explain how the SATs will run in school  To give you information about how you can support your child’s learning at home in the run up to SATs

 ‘Standard Assessment Tests.’ Also now known as ‘End of Key Stage Assessments,’ or ‘Statutory Assessments.’  These tests are given at the end of each key stage to show progress. They help schools and teachers assess your children’s strengths and the areas they need to work on.  The tests determine children’s attainment in English and Maths – on the day they do the test!  Children are assessed by these national tests at the ages of: age 7 : Year 2, age 11 : Year 6, age 14 : Year 9

 A new national curriculum has been taught since September  Those pupils who are at the end of KS2 in May 2016 will be the first to be assessed against the new national curriculum.  From 2016, KS2 national curriculum test outcomes will no longer be reported using levels. Scaled scores will be used instead.  There will only be 1 set of tests for each subject. The tests will include a small number of questions designed to assess the most able pupils so separate tests, such as the previous level 6 tests, are no longer required.  The mental mathematics test has been replaced with an arithmetic test.

 English reading: reading booklet and associated answer booklet  English grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 1: short answer questions  English grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 2: spelling  Mathematics Paper 1: arithmetic  Mathematics Paper 2: reasoning  Mathematics Paper 3: reasoning

DAYTEST Monday 9 MayReading Test Tuesday 10 MayGrammar Test Spelling Test Wednesday 11 MayMaths Paper 1, arithmetic test. Maths, Paper 2, reasoning. Thursday 12 MayMaths Paper 3, reasoning.

 The test consists of a reading booklet and a separate answer booklet.  Pupils will have a total of 1 hour to read the 3 texts in the reading booklet and complete the questions at their own pace.  There will be a mixture of genres of text. The least- demanding text will come first with the following texts increasing in level of difficulty.  Pupils can approach the test as they choose: e.g. working through one text and answering the questions before moving on to the next.  The questions are worth a total of 50 marks. Have a look at the sample papers

 There are two papers, the first tests grammar, punctuation and vocabulary and the second is a spelling test.  Paper one is 45 minutes long and is worth 50 marks. There are 20 spellings, all worth one mark  The children are expected to know and apply grammatical terminology and the full range of punctuation is tested. Have a look at the sample papers

 There are 3 papers; Paper 1: arithmetic; Paper 2: reasoning; and Paper 3: reasoning.  The arithmetic test assesses mathematical calculations. The test consists of a single test paper. Pupils will have 30 minutes to complete 36 questions, which are worth a total of 40 marks.  For papers 2 and 3, pupils will have 40 minutes to complete each test. Each paper will have questions worth a total of 35 marks. Have a look at the sample papers

 The papers are sent away and marked externally, we do not get to see them once the child has completed the test. We are not allowed to see the questions before the test begins  You will be informed about the results of the tests before the end of the summer term. Your child’s secondary school will also receive a copy of the levels  You will receive details of your child’s score in each test (called their raw score) and then the result as a scaled score. A scaled score of 100 is considered to be a ‘pass’ – the child is considered to be working at the required standard.

 Scaled scores help test results to be reported consistently from one year to the next.  For the KS2 tests a scaled score of 100 will always represent the ‘expected standard’.  A pupil’s scaled score will be based on their raw score. The raw score is the total number of marks a pupil receives in a test. The pupil’s raw score will be translated into a scaled score using a conversion table.

 Flexible timetables and mixed ability teaching  Mock papers  Intervention and booster groups  Tutoring – Third Space Learning, Sound Training  Tunes Times Tables  Accelerated Reader  Mathletics  Employed additional staff  Revision books and additional resources  Support from other adults in school  Easter club

 Encourage your child to do all of their homework  Encourage your child to read, learn their multiplication facts and spellings  Let a member of Year 6 staff know if you spot any problems with work or attitude  Give your child lots of encouragement, praise and some time to relax  Revise in a ‘fun’ way; with a friend, using the internet, with a sibling or parent.  Attend Easter Club

Encouraging the children to think positively and be confident. They use normal classroom practises to complete these tests.

 SATs week begins on 9 th May 2016 so…  Early to bed every night  Healthy breakfast to get your brain working  Come to school every day  Be on time, waiting by the door, so we can bring you into school at the right time  Do all of your homework  Ask if you need any help  During SATs week, please ring school as early as possible if your child is feeling poorly.

Please complete a feedback post-it note. Your child will be able to help you write a ‘learning comment’ – they do this at the end of their lessons!
