Ch 1-5: Measuring Segments
A trip down memory lane… The number line
Any point on the number line corresponds to only one number A Point A is at -3 B Point B is at 4 The coordinate of a point on the number line is a real number. In the illustration, -3 is the coordinate of point A and 4 is the coordinate of point B.
Length of a segment AB The length of a segment is the number of spaces between the endpoints on the number line. The length of segment AB in this case is ____ To find the length on a number line use the formula _______________ | 4 – (-3) | = 7 or | (-3) – 4 | = 7 7 | A – B | or | B – A |
If point A is on -2 and point B is on 7, what is the length of AB? a) 5 b) - 9 c) 9 a) 5 b) - 9 c) 9 Congruent means having the same measure. (equal) Definition of Congruent
Congruent segments ABAB C D “segment AB is congruent to segment CD” (*they have the same length)
How to mark congruent segments in a figure A B C D E
How to mark congruent segments in figures A B C DEDE FGFG
Segment Addition Postulate If point R is between points P and Q on a line, the PR + RQ = PQ PR Q
1. If AB = 4 & BC = 7, then AC = ___ a) 3 b) -3 c) If DS = 2x-8, ST = 3x-12 & DT = 60, find the value of x, then find DS & ST. 3. EG = 100. Find the value of x, then find EF & FG.
A midpoint of a segment is a point that divides the segment into 2 = parts. A midpoint or any line, ray or segment t/ a midpoint, is said to be the bisector of the segment.
Here’s another one: Z is the midpoint of XY, & XY = 27. Find XZ.
