Welcome First Graders Welcome First Graders We will work together as a community and We will have many new opportunities. We will learn to write and read. We will work hard and we will succeed. We will study properties, animals and weather too, and that’s not all that we will do! We will learn to add and subtract and how to create thinking maps. We will go on fieldtrips to the museum and zoo. We will answer questions like why, what and who. So welcome first graders! You are special each and everyone. Our year together will be so much fun! Behavior Systems Students begin each day on a green light. If the student does something exceptional they may move to the star. Once a student has reached the star five times they will get a prize. If a student breaks one of the classroom rules they will go to a yellow light and have a warning. If they continue to struggle they will go to a red light and a refocus. A note will come home to be signed. If the note is not signed, the student will receive a call home. First Grade Expectations Important reminders It is important that students attend class and arrive on time. If they arrive late they miss out on learning. Much of the curriculum is accumulative, meaning that lessons build on each other. If a student misses too much school they will fall behind. Students should get a good night sleep and have breakfast. ( breakfast at Archuleta is free for students) Students must wear a uniform to school. (khaki, black, or navy blue slacks with a collared shirt which may be white, navy blue, light blue or maroon.) Math Math Students need to recognize and be able to write the numbers by the end of the year. addition and subtraction of 1 digit numbers. telling time to the minute by the end of the year. Counting coins (pennies, nickels, and dimes) by the end of the year. Identify odd and even numbers Identify greater than, less than and equal to. Reading Reading Students should be reading at a level 16 by the end of first grade. Students should know the following reading strategies; using picture and context clues, beginning and ending sounds, chunking, blending, segmenting, and re-reading. Writing Students should be able to write their first and last name. Student will learn 100 no excuse words and be able to recognize words families. Students will learn to put words in alphabetical order. Students should be able to write a complete sentence, including correct punctuation and starting with a capital letter. Students should be able to correctly form all the letters of the alphabet and know their associated sounds. Homework ◦ Homework will be given out once a week on Monday’s. It is designed so that the student can work on reading, spelling and math each week night. ◦ Students will have reading logs to be completed each week night. It is crucial that they are reading at home. ◦ Students will have high frequency spelling words to work on each week. ◦ Homework is due on Friday’s. ◦ There will be a spelling test each Friday. created by Melissa Robertson-Hughes
Homework Folders The Friday folder is where you will find the newsletters and notes that are sent home, as well as any homework that needs to be completed. The monthly newsletter will help you keep up with important happenings in our classroom. Please go through the folder and return any materials. It is your responsibility to return homework and the folders the following Thursday. Star of the Week Each students will be assigned a week in which they are the “Star of the week”. This will be done to help us learn more about each other and build a classroom community. Uniforms BOTTOMS: Students may wear black, khaki, or navy blue pants, skirts, shorts, or jumpers. TOPS: Students may wear maroon, white, navy blue or light blue polo shirts, button ups, sweatshirts and sweaters. Toys Students are not allowed to bring toys to school. If students bring toys to school they will be confiscated. The only way they will get them back is if you send in a note stating you are aware that your child brought a toy to school. Drop off and Pick Up Students may be dropped of starting at 8:15 in the cafeteria and may go to the playground starting at 8:30. Student will line up outside near the classrooms back door at 8:50. Breakfast will be served in the classroom at 8:50. At 3:45 students may be picked up out the backdoor.
