WRF-Smoke Dispersion Model System Description and Initial Implementation Plan

Outline Purpose System Overview Prediction Method Development Summary Computational Environment

Purpose Develop an operational system Predict PM2.5, Ozone, CO & other pollutants downwind from fires. Use state of the art models to predict: –Fire growth & emissions –Pollutant transport –Chemical reactions during transport Initialize system with current satellite data

System Overview Control Administration Activities Data Archive Data Search Data Extraction Postmortem Activities Prediction Notification Product Generation Automatic Activities Website Update Thetus will manage all components. RED components will have to be made manageable by Thetus.

Prediction & Product Generation MODIS Overpass Process to fire area Ingest to FARSITE Run FARSITE Extract prediction of emissions Ingest to WRF-chem Setup and run WRF-chem Archive smoke transport prediction Repeat for all designated fires Process to AOT Archive AOT & Fire area Generate web products Bring under Thetus management: RR MOD14 algorithm Burn scar algorithm Production of fire area from hotspots or burn scar FARSITE data/runs WRF-chem data/runs Product generation

Major Development Areas Generation of burned areas from MODIS data. Acquire computer for WRF runs Initial setup of WRF CONUS domain Non-GUI FARSITE Reformat data between components Integration of components into Thetus

System Environment External ISP Connection SEM Web Services Current hotspot map Hotspot database Current smoke prediction NWS Network MODIS DB Station 2 Linux MODIS DB processors Linux fileserver/FCHuey National Weather Service WRF-chem Computer Linux/Thetus server Where to put this? ?/FARSITE server

Thetus questions For archive browsing: can the webserver be separate from the Thetus server? What is the mechanism for triggering a processing chain on remote machines? Need a client or is ssh sufficient?

National Burned Area DB Network Firelab Thetus server Firelab DB RSAC DB GSFC DB Florida? DB Firelab FARSITE server Firelab WRF server ….
