The Formation of Modern American Mass Culture Many of the defining books and movies of modern American culture emerged during the 1920s The materialism sparked by the Roaring Twenties left many intellectuals empty The 1920’s was a decade characterized by themes of modernism Themes of sexuality, technology, and social progress were also prominent during these times

An Overview of Literature Books, magazines, and newspapers were how most people became aware of current events Many novels made people step back and look upon their wrong-doings List of impacting novels on society: The Waste Land, The Great Gatsby, The Sun Also Rises, Strange Interlude, and The New Negro The Harlem Renaissance paved a way for African American writers like Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and W. E. B. Du Bois
