Writing and Solving Multi-Step Inequalities You will learn to… -Write and solve inequalities that involve more than one operation.

Example 6-1a Define a variable, write an inequality, solve, and answer the question. Maddy, the new Disney princess, flies at a rate of 50 meters per minute. If she wants to fly at least 3000 meters, write an inequality to find out how long she will need to fly.

Example 6-1b Define a variable, write an inequality, solve, and answer the question. The product of an integer and -4 is less than -18. Find the least integer that meets this condition.

Example 6-2a Define a variable, write an inequality, solve, and answer the question. To qualify for a store discount, Ricky’s Soccer team must spend at least $720 for new jerseys. The team needs thirty jerseys. Write an inequality to represent how much the team should spend on each jersey to qualify for the discount. How much should the team spend for each jersey?

Example 6-2b Define a variable, write an inequality, solve, and answer the question. The product of an integer and 5 is less than -23. Find the least integer that meets this condition.

Example 6-3a Define a variable, write an inequality, solve, and answer the question. A certain minivan has a maximum carrying capacity of 1200 pounds. If the luggage weighs 150 pounds, what is the maximum weight allowable for passengers?

Example 6-3b Define a variable, write an inequality, solve, and answer the question. Two times a number minus four is greater than the same number increased by 6. Describe the set of numbers that satisfy the conditions of the problem. What is the smallest integer that satisfies the conditions?

Example 6-3b Define a variable, write an inequality, solve, and answer the question. One half of the difference of a number and 8 is less than 20. What is the number?

Example 6-3b Define a variable, write an inequality, solve, and answer the question. Lenny wants to go fishing on the lake. A boat rents for $8 per hour and a rod and reel rent for $12 per day. If he wants to spend no more than $60, how many hours can he spend fishing in the boat?

Example 6-3b Define a variable, write an inequality, solve, and answer the question. Keri is inviting 10 friends to a party. If she wants to spend no more than $120 on her guests, and dinner for each guests costs $8, what is the most she can spend on party favors for each person?

Example 6-3b Define a variable, write an inequality, solve, and answer the question. Admission to the fair costs $9 and each ride costs $2. If Abby wants to spend no more than $21 at the fair, how many rides can she ride?

Example 6-3b Define a variable, write an inequality, solve, and answer the question. An elevator can hold no more than 2500 pounds. If every member of the football team weighs 150 pounds and they have about 50 pounds of equipment, how many team members can safely ride in the elevator at the same time?

Example 6-3b Define a variable, write an inequality, solve, and answer the question. Yuko wants to buy teddy bears that cost $8.50 each for her eight nieces and nephews. She would like to get a hat for each teddy bear, also. If Yuko wants to spend no more than $94, how much can she spend on each hat?
