Four Geographical Groups American Indians lived in tribes. Indian tribes in California were larger than in other places. Lived in small villages. Long-lasting Short-term Each tribe had their own language to communicate with.

Four Geographical Groups Tribes that lived in the same type of environment had lives that were alike in some ways. Food: Ex: Different tribes in the Desert Group ate same foods since they found the same type of animals and plants in that environment. Shelter & Clothing: Ex: Since climate was the same, their homes and clothes were also alike. Central Valley & Mountains Desert Southern Coast Northern Coast
Tribes of the Northern Coast Yurok, Hupa, Karuk, Pomo, and Wiyot They used rich natural resources from forests, rivers and Pacific Ocean. Climate: Rainy and cool. Shelter: Built strong homes to protect them from the weather. Clothes: Wore animal-skin capes and blankets.
Indians of the Central Valley and Mountains Region Tribes: Miwok, Maidu, & Yokuts They had the most land and largest population in California. Climate: Mild Shelter & Clothes: Simple Travel: Moved from valleys during summers to cooler areas near the mountains. Food: Plenty of food Hunted animals. Gathered seeds, nuts, acorns, & berries. Fished in rivers.
Indians of the Southern Coast Tribes: Chumash & Gabrielino Lived in Southwestern part of California. Built strong canoes for traveling by water. Shelter: Lived in large villages. Food: Hunted, fished, and gathered acorns. Acorns were a main food.
Indians of the Desert Tribes: Mojave, Cahuilla, & Serrano They had a smaller population and life was hard. Climate: Hot & dry Few plants grew there. Food: Ate insects, seeds, & beans Some lived along the Colorado River and farmed.
