Agenda Conference Announcement (Extra Credit) Essay 3: Outline Essay 1: Language Use Workshops

Extra Credit You can receive up to 20 points of extra credit for attending the Your Story Our Movement conference on Friday.

Extra Credit To get credit you need to attend the welcome/breakfast, a morning workshop and an afternoon workshop. You also need to write a one-page write-up describing your experience and the workshops you participated in.

Essay 3 Essay 3 will be an analytical essay about a YouTube video. In this video you will explain what the video means for a particular audience. The question is this: “What does this video mean?”

Essay 3 You should like the video, and you should consider yourself part of the audience. The audience forms a community. You will be representing yourself as part of a community, and you will be representing this community.

Essay 3 Your analysis will be of both the video itself and the audience. Try to explain why this audience is interested in the video. What makes the video meaningful for this audience.

Essay 3 The video should have had at least 25,000 views.

Essay 3 The big challenge will be unifying your essay. How are the different parts of your essay related to your thesis? Transitions will be a key tool for you to unify your essay. You will need to do some research for your essay.

Essay 3 Possible parts of your essay: –The Community –Background –The Video Itself –Community Interpretation

Essay 3 The Community (possibly the introduction) –Your thesis answers the following question: What does the video mean for a particular community? –General points about the audience (brief) –The segment of the audience that you belong to –The significance of the video for your segment

Essay 3 Background –The creator of the video (possibly the channel) –The subject of the video (for example, the performers) –Many performers have Wikipedia pages

Essay 3 The Video Itself –General points about the visual style of the video –Plot summary –Music and sound

Essay 3 Community Interpretation (over one page) –Explanation (you should rely on comments from the video) –Identify what is important for the community Dialogue that stands out Important shots Music and sound –Identify the objective of the video and the orientation that the video suggests for the community –Criticism (does the video point the community in a positive direction?)

Essay 3 Rough Drafts will be due next Thursday. A reading journal assignment is due over the weekend. Let’s watch some videos.

Language Use Workshops If you received a B or above for language use on your essay you can leave if you want. We will rewrite a paragraph from someone’s essay. We also need to schedule times for the small-group workshops. I will confirm these with you over .
