Prime 7 Comparing two cities

Choose two cities you’d like to spend a year in. Imagine your boss tells you that you need to move to one of the two cities you have chosen. Tell your partner which one you would prefer to live in.

Beauty Pace Quality of life

Expressions of comparison and contrast can help a writer examine the similarities and differences between two or more places, objects, ideas... They can also make a piece of writing clearer and more interesting. What are some of the linking words that you can use in this kind of writing? Let’s practice!

LIKE Like New York, Prague attracts a lot of tourists.

SIMILARLY New York is known for its architecture. Similarly, Prague is famous fot its historic buildings.

Both New York and Prague have problems with pollution. BOTH...AND... Both New York and Prague have problems with pollution.

ALSO /TOO Prague has an exciting social scene, and New York also does. Prague has a great night-life. New York does, too.

IN CONTRAST The cost of living in NY is very high. In contrast, Prague is quite affordable. Prague has fewer restaurants than NY. Nevertheless, the cuisine there is generally of high quality.

HOWEVER Prague has fewer restaurants than NY. However, the cuisine there is generally of high quality. BOTH...AND...,BUT Both NY and Prague have many cultural attractions, but they are not as affordable in NY as in Prague.

ON THE ONE HAND...ON THE OTHER HAND On the one hand, I would make less money in Prague. On the other hand, I would not work such long hours there.

Prewriting. Planning ON A CHART, WRITE THE NAMES OF THE CITY WHERE YOU LIVE NOW AND THE NAME OF THE CITY YOU HAVE TRAVELED TO. List the similarities between the cities under both and the differences under the cities names. City 1 City 2 Both

Read the model given on page 72 (Student’s Book) There are two ways to organize a comparison/contrast paragraph: you can (1) discuss the items being compared point by point with each other, or (2) discuss one item completely and then the second item completely in separate paragraphs. Read the model given on page 72 (Student’s Book) How did the author organize the paragraph?

Prime 7 If I had to choose to live in Prague or stay in New York City, I would choose Prague. Both New York and Prague are beautiful cities and have many great qualities, but Prague appeals to me more. On the other hand, I love the fast pace on new York. It’s exciting to live in one of the busiest cities in the world. However, I feel like I am always rushing somewhere. In contrast, the pace of life in Prague is much slower than in New York. I think that in a smaller city I would enjoy more and have a better life. Both New York and Prague are very interesting places, but I’d be happier in the latter. Identify the TOPIC SENTENCE Finish your paragraph with a CONCLUDING SENTENCE

Writing. On a separate piece of paper, compare and contrast the two cities in your chart. Explain which city you would prefer to live in. Use expressions of comparison and contrast and conditionals. City 1 City 2 Both

Did you use expressions for comparison correctively Did you use expressions for comparison correctively? Did you use expressions for contrast correctively? Did you use conditionals to describe your preferences? Did you use them correctively? Did you write a topic sentence? Did you write a concluding sentence?
