 Literally “seize the day,” a literary term that urges living in the present moment, especially in pleasurable pursuits

 If you found the intricacies of the sonnet form and musical language of Elizabethan love poetry artificial, you are not alone. During the 17-century, a number of poets rejected the style the Elizabethan lyric poetry. It became known as metaphysical poetry.

 It was written in the manner of everyday speech.  Metaphysical means abstract or theoretical reasoning.  They experimented with language in imaginative ways.

 They used metaphysical conceit - which is an extended metaphor comparing two dissimilar things (remember fire & ice?).  They also used paradox - a statement that seems contradictory but suggests a truth. Example: The only thing certain is that nothing is certain.  Complex sentence patterns  Witty and imaginative plays on words
