Preliminaries  Respond briefly to the following prompt: “Consider an incident in their lives that has left them transformed or changed forever. Have students briefly write the story of the incident in their journals, elaborating on the transformation they underwent, the power or insight they gained, and whether the incident involved actions or occurrences that seemed unreal, almost magical.”

Objectives:  Demonstrate after reading an understanding [cause and effect] and interpretation of both fiction and nonfiction text, including public documents. (PA G)  Make, and support with evidence, assertions about texts. (PA G)  Compare and contrast texts using themes, settings, characters and ideas. (PA G)

Focus Lesson: …Summit  Literary Terms  Journalism  Cause  Effect  Background  “Into Thin Air”  Mt. Everest  Cause and Effect  Divide into groups of 4 or 5 and pass out copies of the “Cause-Effect” diagram  We will listen to the audio of “Into Thin Air”. As you listen, all members in the groups will record examples of cause and effect on the diagram.

Homework  Read the “Sundiata” story.  Explain why it is ironic that Sundiata becomes king.
