Presentation transcript:

Today we will be learning: to recognise fractions of shapes to recognise fractions that are several parts of a whole to compare and order two or more fractions.

Mental Activity Look at this shape. What fraction is shaded? 1414

What fraction is not shaded? Three-quarters How could we write “three quarters” using figures? 3434

What fraction is shaded now? Two-quarters What fraction is the same as two- quarters? =

If this cake were divided into ten equal parts, what would each part be called? Each part would be one tenth. How could we write “one tenth” using figures? 1 10

Five tenths are the same as one half. Can you write this as a number sentence? = How many tenths would be the same as one half?

Main Activity Today we are going to work with fractions.

FractionNameNumber of parts Picture Complete this table tenthten equal parts

FractionNameNumber of parts Picture What would two tenths look like? 1 10 tenthten equal parts 2 10 tenths ten equal parts

FractionNameNumber of parts Picture What about five tenths? 5 10 tenthsten equal parts

FractionNameNumber of parts Picture What would ten tenths look like? 5 10 tenthsten equal parts10 tenths ten equal parts

What does “equivalent” mean? “Equivalent” means “of the same value”. Think of an example of two fractions which are equivalent. So equivalent fractions are equal to each other.

Group Work Complete families of equivalent fractions. Colour in fractions of shapes. Find pairs of equivalent fractions.
