The Iditarod started in Why? In 1925 there was a big disease in Nome Alaska called Diphtheria. They couldn’t fly planes or helicopters so they real the medicine from Anchorage to Nome and saved many lives.
Due to the snow this years snow in Alaska they had to start in Fairbanks. They end in Nome 17 checkpoints There are approximately 1049 miles
