EE/CpE Undergraduate Curriculum Proposal L.R. Harriott, Joanne Dugan, Harry Powell, Ron Williams, Bobby Weikle

Proposal: Replace Physics II and the associated lab as a requirement for EE undergraduates with a 4-credit studio version of ECE 3209 Electromagnetic fields Combine Circuits, Electronics, and Signals and Systems courses into a new series of Electrical and Computer Engineering Fundamentals I, II, and III (4 credits each). With a re-shuffling of content across these courses to bring some advanced topics into the courses earlier (i.e. active components in the first semester) and to emphasize bridging themes (i.e. time domain vs. frequency domain). 4) Expand the lab content of Embedded Systems and make it a 4-credit course

EE UG Comm. Proposal Fields for Physics ECE Fun I,II,III Studio classes ECE Faculty SEAS UCC SEAS Faculty ECE Faculty CS Faculty CpE UG Comm. Joint CS/ECE Faculty SEAS UCC SEAS Faculty Implementation for EE and CpE Class of 2017 and Beyond EE CpE EE & CpE Y Y Y Y

MOTION: The CpE UCC recommends (1) adoption of ECE's proposed changes in core courses, and (2) reducing the number of required unrestricted electives from five courses (fifteen credits) to four courses (twelve credits).

Key Goals 1)increase the emphasis on hands-on lab experiences 2) increase the level of integration of key concepts across courses 3) Eliminate overlap between Physics 2415 and 2419, Physics II and lab and ECE 3209 Electromagnetic Fields, a required EE course.

Rationale Experience with studio teaching/learning in Embedded Systems has been very positive New/revised courses will be developed and taught initially by committee members (plus volunteers) Studio classroom space under development Use of laptop-based tools (e.g. NI) Hybrid studio format may be necessary for some courses with high enrollment – offering classes in both semesters may help

Implementation: Student View Graduating Classes 2015 and 2016 – No change – follow current curriculum/requirements Graduating Class 2017 and beyond – Follow new curriculum/requirements

Motion: The CpE UCC recommends to the CS and ECE faculty that the departments seek SEAS UCC approval for the following change in the CpE major requirements: the requirement that CpE majors take Physics II shall be replaced with a requirement that CpE majors take either Physics II or Electromagnetic Fields.
