 The cast for the statue was commissioned by Fr. Greg O’Kelly S.J. and was sculpted by Brooke-Maurice in 26 of October,  Fr. Phillip Wallbridge S.J. was the Headmaster of Xavier College at the time of the installation of the statues and he set up a committee to decide where to put the statue.

 Michal Stony S.J. came up with the idea of the statue being placed outside of the Hawkins Room, near the year 12 corridor, which was one of the busiest area around the school. The staff were unsure on why he would place the statue in the particular area. With the students going pass it they were sure to damage the statue.  Even though it wasn’t a practical place to put it, it was a constant reminder to the students of the history of Xavier and their foundation.

 It was then moved from outside the Hawkins Room to outside the chapel. He was concreted in facing the school. It was meant to mean that he was welcoming the students into the school.  But Fr. Wallbridge S.J. was far from happy. He wanted Ignatius to be facing the world. So days after being placed the wrong way around, he was turned in the correct direction.

 A committee formed for a new location in the school for the statue, this committee was led by Chris McCabe and Fr. Michael Ryan. In 2002 the statue was moved to its current position in the north eastern corner of the school in the Rigg Quad amidst the pleasant garden setting.  He remains in the Rigg Quad today. Many people say he lies in the heart of the school and now watches over the staff and students of Xavier College.

 On his bible, “Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam” is sculpted on the cover. In Latin this means “For the Greater Glory of God”.

 Also, there is a chest plate on the ground next to him. Engraved into it is the Loyola family crest. Loyola is represented by a black pot, suspended by a chain and two wolves beside it.
