FRONT DRIVE AXLES CHAPTER 5 Classroom & Lab Page 99
YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO Explain the purposes of a FWD car’s axles. Describe methods to offset torque steer. Name and describe types of CV-joints. Name and describe designs of CV-joints. Explain how a ball type CV-joint functions. Explain how a tripod-type CV-joint functions. Page 99
DRIVE AXLE CONSTRUCTION Two drive shafts, made of three pieces. Axles pivot on CV-joints, inner and outer. Outer CV-joint is supported by the steering knuckle. Inner CV-joint connects to the differential. Page 99

CV-JOINTS With out CV-joints FWD would not be possible. CV-joints transfer torque at a constant rate. CV-joints can operate through a wide range of angles. U-joints DO NOT provide a constant speed. Page 104
CV BOOTS Boots keep lubrication in. Boots keep dirt and moisture out of the joint. DO NOT INSTALL SPLIT BOOTS! Axle must be removed to install new boot. CV-joint must be completely disassembled, cleaned, and inspected before replacing boot. Always use new clamps. Page 105
TYPES OF CV-JOINTS Inboard joints are of the plunge design. Outboard joints are fixed. Page 107
CV-JOINT DESIGNS Two basic designs; Ball Type Tripod Type Both are available in fixed or plunging.
OUTER CV-JOINT Two basic Types; ALL OUTER JOINTS ARE FIXED. Rzeppa Fixed CV-joint Fixed Tripod joint ALL OUTER JOINTS ARE FIXED. Page 107
INNER CV-JOINT Three basic Types; ALL INBOARD JOINTS ARE PLUNGING. Double-offset CV-joint Plunging Tripod joint Cross-groove plunge joint ALL INBOARD JOINTS ARE PLUNGING. Page 107
CV-JOINT WEAR Outer Joints are replaced 9 to 1 more than inner joints. Wear causes NOISE, or VIBRATION. Replace punctured boots immediately. Disassemble and clean joint completely. Use all of the grease supplied in kit. Use new clamps. Page 113
