Masters in Education: Now What Thinking About Career Options for the Future By Elizabeth Parsons
Why I Might Not Teach Full- Time I will be 47 years old when I get my Masters in Elementary Education. I will be close to retiring from the Chicago Fire Department. I will not have to work full-time because I will already have an income from my City of Chicago pension. I might not want to work full-time.
What will I do? I can be a substitute teacher. I can be a tutor. I can stay in school. I can create lessons.
Why substitute teach? Flexible schedule Less Stress Opportunities for creative and unusual lessons
Why be a tutor? Opportunity to create unique lessons for student’s individual learning style Flexible schedule Avoid bureaucracy of school system
Why go back to school? I enjoy going to school. If I learn a specialty, I will have even more options. I will have time to go to school before I retire from the Fire Department.
Why create lessons? I really have fun thinking of creative activities for lessons. I would like to have an influence on curriculum.
On the other hand, I could be a full-time teacher I would get good at my job. I would get to know students. I could have medical benefits. I might enjoy the challenge.
Lucky me! ♦ I am enjoying going to school. ♦ I have lots of options for the future!
