SAMUEL COLERIDGE BY: CARLEY, KATELYN, LAUREN, STEVEN, MAGGIE, AND DAVID

Life  Born October 21, 1772  Ottery St. Mary on the Devon coast of England  In 1781 after his father died, Coleridge attended Christ’s Hospital School in London  In 1791, Coleridge entered Jesus College, University of Cambridge  In 1793, Coleridge left college to join the Royal Dragoons but his brothers had him discharged because of “insanity” and he reentered Cambridge.

Life continued…  In 1795, Coleridge married Sarah Fricker. He was unhappy and away from her often.  He planned to form a settlement in Pennsylvania with Robert Southey based on their utopian political ideas. That plan collapsed.  He suffered from asthma and rheumatism which dulled his creative powers.  In 1806, he separated from his wife and moved near Wordworth’s. Their friendship shattered 4 years later because Wordworth thought Coleridge was irresponsible.

Romantic Period  Coleridge thought that poetry was when real life slips into dreams, and facts are reborn as fantasies.  He liked strange and exotic ideas  He had great insight into the power of imagination in literature and life  Emphasized the idealization of nature and how it impacts human joy  You must be happy to become one with nature

Famous Pieces  Published Poems on Various Subjects in 1976  Published Lyrical Ballads with Wordsworth in 1797  Wordsworth wanted to write about common people in natural settings but Coleridge liked exotic ideas  His poems set a new style by using everyday language and fresh ways of looking at nature. “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” “Kubla Khan” “Frost at Midnight” “This Lime-Tree Bower My Prison” “The Eolian Harp”
