Occupation – refers to a group of similar jobs found in different industries or organizations (e.g. education, health care, engineering etc) Career – the course of one’s life in which work and other activities are integrated to achieve personal goals.

Language/Terms You Should Know Secondary/post-secondary – refers to high school and after high school Degree – an award from a university or college indicating that a person has completed a course of study. Diploma - a document verifying the completion of a course of study.

Language/Terms Apprenticeship – A form of education that involves both classroom and on-the- job training and that leads to certification in a specific trade. Self-Directed Learning – learning determined by the individual Distance Education – continuing education programs that are conducted by correspondence or over the internet.

Beyond High School Follow-up Study of June 2001 High School Graduates

Post Secondary Participation: 71% of June 2001 high school graduates engaged in post- secondary studies 93% of graduates who were not attending post secondary at the time expressed a desire to attend sometime in the future. 56% attending MUN 25% attending the College of the North Atlantic

Those Not Attending Post- Secondary The majority of those not pursuing post- secondary were employed in full-time or part-time low skill positions in retail sales and fast food establishments. Their wages reflected the absence of any formal post- secondary education. The harsh reality is that these students will remain in low-skill, low income jobs unless they increase their educational attainment.
