DOE Offices of Science and Defense Programs are jointly funding a Nanoscience Network to advance the discovery and understanding of nanoscale phenomena. l Use “glue” funding to stimulate and facilitate synergistic, multi-laboratory collaborations among the existing nanoscience programs. l Selection Criteria: u Excellence in science u Mission relevance to DP u Demonstrable new potential u At least 2 DP and 2 other DOE labs

Nanoscale Tribology –Microsystems for surety, detonation, and high fidelity Joint Test Assemblies Nanostructured Energy Storage –Precision detonators, net-shape casting of explosives, and optical surface ignition Tailored Nanostructures –New materials for physics experiments, Joint Test Assemblies, and microsystems Nanoscale Features of Deformation –Nanostructural effects for predictive aging of the nuclear explosive package Nanostructural Photonics –Surety and environmental sensing l A workshop in April identified 5 scientifically challenging research areas with DP mission relevance and potential for high impact multi- laboratory synergy. l In FY 2001, 3 Network projects will be launched and funded at the level of $300K glue funding each
