By the end of this section you should be able to answer the questions:  What makes up a solution?  How is a solution different from a heterogeneous mixture?  What is the difference between an electrolyte and a nonelectrolyte?

Solution – a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances uniformly dispersed throughout a single phase

In this picture, identify the: solute solvent solution Do you think the solution will be an electrolyte or a nonelectrolyte?

Solute = orange juice concentrate Solvent = water Solution = orange juice drink This solution would be an electrolyte because the orange juice contains citric acid which will become charged ions in solution. This will allow current to pass through the solution.

 Read each statement and determine whether you are: on target (bulls-eye), near the target, or completely off target.  I CAN define the composition of a solution.  I CAN differentiate between a solution and a heterogeneous mixture.  I CAN differentiate between electrolyte and nonelectrolyte.
