Understanding Word Parts

Some English words such as ground, age, and clock are called base words. They cannot be broken down into word parts. However, many English words are made of – prefixes, – suffixes, and – roots.

Unicyclist combines… The prefix uni (meaning one) The root cycle (meaning wheel) The suffix ist (meaning a person who) – A unicyclist is a person who rides a one-wheeled vehicle.

Hemispheric combines… The prefix hemi (meaning half) The root sphere (meaning ball) The suffix ic (meaning nature of) – As the orbiter rounded the moon, the sun’s rays made the earth look like a beautiful hemispheric spaceship.
