The Question of Timing o Salvation is future for Zephaniah: e.g., 1:7; 2:2; 3:8, 11. o Here desire births delight: “The certainty of future joy after the day of the Lord births present joy amidst pain. The very joy for which the remnant aimed would become a joy that would sustain” (DeRouchie, Zephaniah).

Heb 12:1–3 Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.

Takeaway King Jesus is Zephaniah’s King Yahweh o Zephaniah sees Yahweh as deliverer. o Zechariah sees Yahweh working through a human deliverer. Zech 9:9: Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. o For John, Jesus is performing Yahweh’s role. John 12:15: Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!

Zephaniah’s remnant from the nations corresponds to Jesus’s saving the world. o John sees Jesus coming for a group larger than the Jews. He leave’s out “ to you ” from Zech 9:9. o John 12:15. Zephaniah’s remnant from the nations corresponds to Jesus’s saving the world. o John sees Jesus coming for a group larger than the Jews. He leave’s out “ to you ” from Zech 9:9. The Pharisees response to the triumphal entry was, “Look, the whole world has gone after him” (John 12:19; cf. 3:16). The Greeks see Jesus: “Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. So these came to Philip … and asked, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus’” (John 12:20–21).

King Jesus is Zephaniah’s warrior deliverer, who will save from the enemy judgments. o The crowd’s “Hosanna” is a cry for salvation (John 12:13). o After the king comes in Zech 9:9, he establishes a worldwide rule through force and conquest (9:11–17). o John 12:27–32.

John 12:27–32 [Jesus said,] “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” 30 Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine. 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”

King Jesus’s arrival starts Zephaniah’s day of the Lord Rejoice today in hope; the King has come!
