Alliteration The repetition of a particular sound in the stressed syllables of a series of words or phrases Examples: –Alice’s aunt ate apples around August. –Fred’s friends fried Fritos for Friday’s food

Allusion A statement that refers to something without mentioning to it directly Examples: –Stop acting like my father –It has rained so long, it seems as though it has rained for forty days and forty nights

Analogy A statement that refers to something without mentioning it directly Examples: –He is like a rock. This means he is steadfast and strong –I feel like a fish out of water

Anaphora Type of expression whose reference depends upon another referential element. Examples: –My life is my purpose. My life is my goal. My life is my inspiration –“I want my money right now, right here, all right?”

Anecdote A short and amusing or interesting story about a real incident or person Examples: –When i was your age, Pluto was a planet. we spent a whole day in 4th grade watching videos and discussing how it was the "cold" planet. – I was walking down the sidewalk and I saw a very short man throwing around a baseball with his son, and wondered what my daughter would say and so we get to the playground and i asked what she thought of the man with no legs and she said she thought he was standing in a hole throwing a ball to his son.

Aphorism An original thought, spoken or written in a concise and memorable form Examples: –Life’s Tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late (Benjamin Franklin). –Lost time is never found again (Benjamin Franklin).
