What knowledge is tested? 4 Writing (2 days) March 18 th & 19 th 4 Reading (1 day) March 20 th 4 Science (1 day) Biology May 28 th - 30 th 4 Math (1 day) June 3 rd

What will the writing assessment be like? 4 Each student is given two prompts: One EXPOSITORY One PERSUASIVE

What will the writing assessment be like? Every student in the state will have to write on the same topic Every student will have to finish their writing sample in one sitting The prompts are very general (don’t worry that you will not know enough about a subject to answer the prompt)

What will the writing assessment be like? 4 You will be given very clear instructions about what you are to write. 4 You will then be given AS MUCH TIME AS YOU NEED to respond. 4 If you are still writing after the testing time is passed, you will be taken to another location and given the time you need to finish.

What will the writing assessment be like? 4 Each writing prompt will clearly state a designated topic, audience, purpose (mode), and form. 4 Example: –Decide on how much TV you think students should watch and then write a letter (form) to convince (persuasive mode) parents (audience) to follow your advice (topic).

What do they mean by COS? 4 Content, Organization, Style –Writing is stays focused on the topic –Organizes and connects ideas –Uses different kinds of sentences –Uses words and phrases that suit the audience * If a writing receives a score of “0” for style on one prompt, (that is if they are off mode, off prompt, or exhibit lack organization) the student cannot receive a passing score.

What do them mean by conventions? 4 Conventions = mechanics & punctuation –Correct capitalization –Correct punctuation –Correct spelling –Correct word usage –Correct grammar

How can I earn a “proficient” or “distinguished” writing score? 4 Development of ideas 4 Organization *Be sure to respond to the prompt using the correct mode (purpose). Last year, many of the essays that should have been “expository” were more descriptive than expository.

Example Persuasive Essays 4 Read the first example essay. 4 On a separate sheet of paper, take notes on what the writer does well, and what they struggle with or could have done better.

Example Persuasive Essays 4 Read the second example essay. 4 On a separate sheet of paper, take notes on what the writer does well, and what they struggle with or could have done better.

Example Persuasive Essays 4 Comparing essay #1 to essay #2, what did you notice? 4 What does essay #1 include that essay #2 does not? 4 Why might essay #1 seem more convincing (or more persuasive) than essay #2?

Example Persuasive Essays 4 Based on the similarities and differences we’ve just discussed, what you should you be sure to do in your own persuasive essay? 4 List at least 3 “Be sure to...” before leaving today.
