 Look at how student writing provides formative assessment data for differentiation and a record of student progress in both science and mathematics content  Explore how to support implementation of these critical elements in content areas

The…argument for more student writing is the improvement of academic performance in every…academic area…Students who write more frequently perform better not only on essay exams…but also on multiple- choice tests across a range of subjects… In order to write well, students must think in a logical manner, proceeding from beginning to middle to end. They must think in an analytical manner…when they write well, they think well. And when students think well, they perform better in any context. Reeves, 2002

 Read the article, “Integrated Assessments for ELLs.”  How is this teacher using formative assessment to differentiate for the ELL student, Emil?

 How does this example apply to my work with students?  How can I implement science notebooks (formative assessment) to differentiate?

 Metacognition  Taxonomies  Reasons, Procedures, Results

 How did I get my answer?  Is there another way to get the answer?  Is there another right answer?  Self-awareness of mathematical knowledge

 Questioning mathematical ideas  Searching and researching for mathematics around us  Responding in writing to prior and new mathematics-related knowledge

 Organized lists of words pertaining to mathematical areas and topics ◦ Taxonomies are for:  building fluency  taking notes in mathematics and tracking terminology  assessing pre- and post-mathematical knowledge

 Constructed Response  Open Response  Identify what student knows.  Then, what do you do?

 Read the Sixth Grade Open Response Problem and anchor papers.  Discuss how you could use the responses to differentiate with these students.
