EWF- Rural Water Supply Final Presentation- Spring 2004 Group Members: CJ ChangAndrea Gruber Drew Chi Scott Weeks Senior Consultants: Christopher BooneDale Meck Peter BurnsKendra Skopp Amy GroveAlberto Quiroz Advisor: Dr. Monroe Weber-Shirk

Background In Honduras: Population – 53% of the total 6.7 million live in rural areas Since 1980s, participants in community rural water supply systems: – the Government Water and Sanitation Department – International NGO’s – National NGO’s such as Agua para el Pueblo As a result: in past ten years, access to potable water has risen by over 13% (Trevett and Nunez)

Partner Organization Agua Para el Pueblo (APP) - Honduran Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) – Help developing communities obtain drinking water and adequate sanitation – Aid in design and construction of water distribution systems – Focus on community involvement

Spring 2004 Organization Divided work into four main groups – Spreadsheet – GPS Error Analysis Manual – Project X – Research Chlorination Wastewater Website

Review of Semester’s Goals: Spreadsheet – Add features and fix bugs Project X – Interface with the Spreadsheet, EPANET and GPS GPS – GPS elevation and location data analysis – User Manual Research – Chlorination and Wastewater processes – Develop APP website

Accomplishments- Spreadsheet Fixed minor glitches and coding errors discovered in Honduras Added in new features: – Pressure Breaks in transmission line – Horizontal angle inputs

Accomplishments- GPS Error Altimeter- Elevation Error – Measured relative elevation changes between two GPS units – Accurate to +/- 2 feet for relative changes in elevation

Accomplishments – GPS Error Accuracy of GPS Location Data – Investigated GPS self-reported accuracy – Focused on finding most appropriate track recording interval Using large intervals of TIME while taking tracks (about 10secs) Using Project X, large errors become obvious and easily changeable

Accomplishments- GPS Manual GPS Manual and Surveying Protocol – Explains how to use some basic features – Runs through a survey based on “sample” village Includes graphic of this sample village

Tank Red Octagons = terminal ends Green Arrows = Tracking feature ON Red Arrows- Tracking feature OFF, collecting waypoints at houses Enlarged View of Distribution System Node 1 House B C D E F G G H I Node 2 Node 3

EPAnet Network EPAnet INP File Garmin GPS Unit System Verification and Testing Survey Data Acquisition Transmission System and Tank Design Distribution System Design Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet Project Survey Data Complete System Design Transmission System Specifications Spring 2004 Project X Work Plan

Difficulties – Project X (GPS) Hoped for a pre-existing implementation, but nothing suitable was found C# had no easy way of interfacing with the GPS (a Serial Device)

Accomplishments – Project X (GPS) Implemented communication with a Serial Device using C# Interpreted GPS Protocol Created a User Friendly GUI to view GPS data Replaced basic functionality of ExpertGPS  Full Integration with Project X UI

Difficulties – Project X (UI) Initial design using a primitive graphics display engine called GDI+ – Too Slow to do Realtime Changes – Various algorithms to enhance speed were attempted Redesign using a real graphics engine called DirectDraw

Accomplishments – Project X (GUI) Created UI to display points – Manipulation and deletion of points – Gives ability to create and modify connections (the pipes) between points Providing a better interface than EPAnet  Full Integration with EPAnet and spreadsheet

Accomplishments- Chlorinator Completed a hydraulic analysis of the current system (which confirmed the suspected problems) Recommended short-term solutions Identified other areas of concern (chlorine demand vs. turbidity, calcium build-up) Made contact with a group at MIT also working on chlorinator design in Honduras

Accomplishments - Wastewater Compiled a report about: Alternative Wastewater Collection – Small Diameter Gravity Sewers On-site and Off-site Wastewater Treatment Relevant Case Studies Additional Sources of Information

Accomplishments - Website Website Contents – Entry Page Mission Statement Brief Factual overview Pictures Spanish/English option – Main page About Us Projects/Case Studies News Links Contact Us

Summary Dale Meck, a senior consultant, will be traveling to Honduras this summer to intern with APP He will deliver: – Updated Spreadsheet and Project X – GPS surveying manual – Chlorination and Wastewater findings

Future Work Organization Work to be Completed Project X User Manual for Entire Software Tool Website Maintenance Integrate Project X with EPANET Convert Spreadsheet into C# Give APP hosting responsibility (in 6 months) Update Website Contents

Lessons Learned When planning, give yourself enough time – Did not take into account the possibility of a major problem (Graphics Engine, Serial Communication) Take into consideration the long term aspects of your project – Who will maintain this work after you leave? – Is what you are doing now the best for the future, or just the best for now?

Thank You!
